Coaching for Positive Change

FAQ

About Coaching

What is coaching?

Coaching is a non-directive conversation with purpose.

It is a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires and enables an individual to gain greater self awareness and to make positive changes in behavior or ways of thinking, both personally and professionally.

Coaching provides an opportunity to find new perspectives, gain insights, get to
better know yourself and your purpose, and identify ways to move forward.

“A one-to-one conversation focused on the enhancement of learning and
development through increasing self-awareness and a sense of personal responsibility where the coach facilitates the coachee’s self- directed learning through questioning, active listening, and appropriate challenge in a supportive and encouraging climate.” (van Nieuwerburgh, 2012)

“A means of unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance” (Sir John Whitmore)

How is coaching different to mentoring?

Coaching and mentoring are two terms that are often used interchangeably. Both coaching and mentoring are development techniques that use skills of listening, questioning, clarifying and reframing, and share one-to-one conversations as the main dynamic. The differences between coaching and mentoring might seem subtle but they are very different relationships. Primarily coaching is non directive whereas in mentoring the mentor might suggest, advise, direct or recommend.

Coaching, as Sir John Whitmore said, “is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” It is focused on facilitating, empowering and enabling the individual to gain greater self awareness and ultimately move forwards. Coaching can be sector, experience and discipline agnostic.

Mentoring on the other hand is, as Andrew Pollard put it, ”the learning of one person through the guidance of another who is more skilled, knowledgeable and experienced, particularly in relation to the context in which the learning is taking place.”

About Clean Language

What is Clean Language?

Clean Language is a questioning technique working with people’s own language and personal metaphors to enable deeper self-exploration, discovery, and understanding.

As the name suggests, Clean Language questions are designed to minimise any influence from the coach’s own experiences, interpretations or assumptions.

Clean Language was developed by counselling psychologist David Grove in the 1980s as a result of his work on clinical methods for resolving complex trauma and experiences for which clients often didn’t have language.

How do Clean questions work?

Clean questions are used with a person’s own words to direct their attention to some aspect of their own experience. Asking these questions often results in an interesting new insight or the recognition of some new possibility. Clean questions invite people to consider their experience from different perspectives and they are often surprised by their own capacity to generate new, powerful and useful ideas about their own experience. Clean Language is used in many different fields, including coaching, therapy, business, health and education.

Why do I use Clean Language?

I began my journey with Clean Language in 2016 and was initially interested in it as a useful way to engage with my children in times of confusion, sadness or when they might not have the language to express what could be troubling them. I was so amazed by how powerful it was that I went on to study more and began to integrate Clean into my coaching sessions. I employ Clean Language techniques to enable me to go that bit deeper with my clients. Where necessary, I will contract with my clients that I might be using Clean methods but for the most part it is intertwined as a
part of my approach.

Coaching with me

What can I expect from a coaching session?

A 60 to 90 minute focused conversation which is facilitated, led and structured by me to help you to reach clarity and achieve the agreed outcomes. Each session will benefit you as a stand-alone session and / or also as a part of a series of sessions to reach your coaching objectives. I might refer to a number of different tools, approaches and techniques as we move through the sessions – I particularly lean towards Cognitive Behavioural techniques and Clean Language.

How can I get the best out of my sessions?

To get the best results, I would recommend that you are in a position where you can truly focus and invest in developing new self-awareness and be willing to charter new territories. The best results come when we are open to taking a thorough approach with focus.

Why do you do what you do?

When I first became aware of coaching over 12 years ago it was a lightbulb moment. It was like everything that I have ever believed in came together. I have always been fascinated by human behavior and psychology. I believe in taking personal responsibility and forward momentum.
I believe we are products of our thoughts and those thoughts are created by our experiences – which means by reframing these thoughts we can change the way we experience life. I believe that we are all able to change.

This is the approach I take to coaching – enabling others to move forward and achieve their purpose, dreams and potential by raising their self-awareness and then breaking down the patterns, thoughts and beliefs that limit them from being at their best.

I believe a coach’s approach is significantly informed very much by who they are as a person. I am naturally curious. I am also logical and analytical and like looking at things from different angles and in different ways. I have found that supporting clients to consider new ways of looking at issues and challenging their current perspectives can have a significant impact.

The Fundamentals

Where and when do sessions take place?

I aim to be as flexible as possible and ensure you can fit your coaching session into your schedule.
I am based in Brighton and London and primarily work with clients at their workplace in a private meeting room.
The majority of my work is face-to-face but I will work to your convenience and can be available for phone or video-call coaching.
In the current climate, I have migrated mostly to zoom and am very happy coaching in this way.

How long is a session?

A session lasts between 60-90 minutes. This will be agreed at contracting stage

How many sessions will I need?

This isn’t easily answered – it varies according to the individual as everyone’s needs are different. The pace at which each client goes can vary considerably, as can the reason for working with a coach.
But generally, six sessions will get clients to a place where they are achieving tangible results, and three sessions will give you a taste of the potential results.
Between nine and twelve coaching sessions is usual for people who are making major changes.

Many clients come for a further number of ‘check-in’ sessions as they continue to evolve, make positive change and achieve their goals as part of maintaining their new mindset. Alternatively, they might ask for more time to develop new goals as they have achieved their existing ones.

What does it cost?

I work with you to create bespoke programmes according to your needs, objectives and requirements
I offer separate rates for coaching that is funded personally as opposed to through an organization.
Please get in touch to find out more

How do you invoice?

When you book your session you will be issued with an invoice. Payment is due before your appointment is confirmed. Session fees are non-refundable if cancelled within 48 hours of appointment
Please contact me for further information or my Ts&Cs

How confidential?

100% confidentiality is guaranteed and central to the success of our coaching relationship. For coaching to be truly effective there needs to be an open, trusting and honest relationship so that you can say whatever comes to mind and know that it goes no further.
I work within a strict code of practice, bound by the ethics of the Association for Coaching. I will keep the contents of the coaching conversations completely confidential.
Things that can be shared, for example, where there might be an internal sponsor, will be contracted at the start of the coaching engagement.

What are the benefits of engaging me as a coach in your personal life?

When engaging me directly as a coach in this capacity we will be focused on your personal effectiveness and development. We will work typically on areas such as increasing confidence, achievement of personal goals in relationships, and your
overall wellbeing.
We work in a holistic way, so that if you want to make a career change, but confidence is clearly something that needs attention, we will tailor your coaching to achieve that.

The Process

How do I get started?
  • Give me a call or drop me a line if you have any questions that I might not have covered here.
  • I then offer an initial (up to) 60min free of charge contracting session where we would cover things such as:
    – Your objectives for coaching
    – What our work together will look like
    – How long we will work together for
    – What constitutes a successful outcome
  • Where there is a client stakeholder we might consider co-creating measures for success and also agree what communication and feedback would be appropriate during the coaching process
  • As part of that conversation we would agree our terms, should you wish to proceed (i.e. number of sessions, length of session, objectives and any measures for success)
If relevant or required I offer phone or email support in-between sessions for the duration of our engagement
Then what happens?
Should you engage my services, once all terms have been agreed, coaching then begins with an initial one-off immersive session

  • We get really clear on the vision for our coaching work together We spend time better understanding who you are – clarifying goals, exploring your values and looking at your life purpose We may think broadly and vision the next 5 or 10 years or we might work on something that is very immediate.
  • Beyond that initial session we would ideally meet every 2-4 weeks and for up to six sessions but there is flexibility to meet more or less frequently according to your needs and preferences.
  • Coaching sessions are usually 60-90 minutes, in person via Zoom or over the phone
  • Our final session will look back on our work together, reflect, review and celebrate your success
  • If, as part of the initial goal setting session, we established measures for success we will re-visit those in our closing session

Measuring Success

How do you measure success?

I begin by working with you, or you and your sponsor, to clarify the desired outcomes from the coaching sessions.
These outcomes become the guiding framework for our sessions and I regularly check-in on where we are regarding our initially agreed objectives.

We open each session with a review and reflection of what’s happened since the previous session, looking at what’s gone well, not so well, and what else you need to have happen in order to move towards your stated goal.

I use feedback forms at the end of each coaching engagement to measure and monitor the success of each case. I can work with any company-specific measures, if required.
